Lateral flange or clip:

Lateral flange or clips is when the shell is left higher along the lateral side of the foot. The lateral flange extends approximal to the fifth met head. The clip extends the deep heel cup on the lateral side about 1 inch. These are used to prevent the patient from sliding off the orthotic laterally.

Medial flange:

Medial flange is when the shell extends up the LA (longitudinal arch). These can be ordered in various heights. The medial flange would be used to create increased arch support and prevents the patient’s foot from splaying over the side of the orthotic.
